The Cost of Cutting Corners: Why Formal Documents Demand Precision

Are you alarmed by the shortcuts people are taking in formal documents? You’re not alone. Recently, I received a resume that had me questioning the integrity of professional writing standards. The resume featured bullet points like:

  • Identified issues & found solutions by engaging stakeholders in meetings discussing future visions & ideas for change. Developed strong relationships & managed change….

Now, let’s pause for a moment. Does replacing the word “and” with an ampersand (&) enhance readability? I’d wager that it does quite the opposite, muddying the text and diluting its professionalism.

When Did Shortcuts Overtake Precision?

At what point did we collectively decide that shaving off milliseconds by typing an ampersand instead of “and” is more valuable than the integrity of our words? Have we reached a stage where speed trumps substance? Are these so-called shortcuts now acceptable in formal documents?

To be candid, I’d be surprised if many employers look favourably upon such a cavalier approach to writing. What’s next? Will our professional correspondence devolve into text speak? It’s a grim thought, but could you imagine receiving a job confirmation that reads:

“Thnks 4 UR rez. Wll contct U l8r!”

Setting Standards in Professional Writing: Why Every Character Counts

The trend towards casual shortcuts in formal documents raises red flags. It risks diluting not only the quality of the document but also the professional image of the person behind it. Your resume, cover letter, or any other formal document reflects your commitment to your career. Shortcuts suggest a lack of that commitment.

Here’s the takeaway: it’s not just about maintaining traditional standards but about conveying your professionalism, attention to detail, and respect for the reader. In this fast-paced world, slowing down to choose our words carefully can make all the difference.

To Summarise: Precision Over Pace

As technology makes it ever easier to cut corners, the real challenge is in maintaining the integrity of our professional documents. It’s about prioritising precision over pace, quality over speed. So, the next time you’re tempted to use an ampersand or any other shortcut, consider the impression you’re leaving. Because in the world of formal documents, every character counts.
